About Nandi School Project

Our Mission

We are on a mission to build a primary school in Nandi, Kenya, and we need your support! Launched in 2016 by Duncan and Petra, our aim was to make a small difference in a poor and isolated village. Initially, this school building project aimed to bring education to this impoverished and remote area of Kenya, but it has evolved into much more.

So far, we have raised £10,705 through donations from friends and family. We have built four classrooms, an admin block with staff rooms and three offices, as well as a library. Additionally, our sponsorship program supports 75 children who receive school fees and food. Petra runs a health program for children, while Duncan oversees a business startup program where new businesses are financed and mentored, with 10% of profits going to the school.

Every single penny raised goes directly to the project; there are no fees, expenses, or travel costs as we cover all of these ourselves. We are actively seeking donors, collaborators, investors, and individuals who wish to get involved to help make this project a success. Please consider helping us by donating via our Donate Page found under the Support Us tab, or alternatively, through our JustGiving page.

The Start of Our Project: A Journey of Compassion and Inspiration

The project began with a simple act of compassion inspired by a TV advertisement featuring a starving child in Uganda. Motivated by the desire to make a difference, the project founders, Duncan and Petra, initiated a sponsorship program through World Vision. However, after discovering discrepancies in the program's operations, they were spurred to take action themselves. Their journey led them to Africa, where they formed a deep connection with Vincent's family, a security guard at their hotel. Witnessing the stark contrast between luxury hotels and the surrounding poverty, Duncan and Petra felt compelled to do more. Their experiences culminated in a transformative safari trip, during which they stayed in a mud hut and attended a local church service. This eye-opening journey sparked the idea for their project, setting them on a path to create lasting change in the community.

Starting Small: The Early Days

In the early days of our project, we took small but significant steps towards our goal. The construction of 2 new classrooms marked the beginning of our efforts to improve educational facilities in the community. Additionally, the dedication of individuals like Kieran and Rachael, who raised £1140 through a 40-mile marathon, and the generosity of children at Krakatoa Pre-School, who raised £400 in a sponsored shoot, exemplified the grassroots support our project received. Furthermore, we collected nearly new shoes from children across the UK, raising valuable funds for our cause. Despite facing challenges such as heavy rain causing substantial damage to the original classrooms overnight, our determination remained unwavering as we pressed on in our mission to create positive change in the community.

See How Far We've Come

Since those humble beginnings, we've made remarkable progress that has exceeded our expectations. With additional funding and generous donations, we completed phase 2 of the project, which saw the addition of 2 classrooms, a staff room, offices, and a library. The culmination of this phase was celebrated with a grand opening attended by esteemed guests. As we moved forward, phases 3 and 4 commenced, focusing on building more classrooms and installing essential amenities like a water well. The enthusiasm and dedication of the community were evident in successful fundraising events like the Water Butt Challenge, where children raised over £1705. Each achievement signifies how far we've come on our journey of compassion and inspiration.
